In the spring of 2007 an important agreement was made between the National Museum of Iceland and the Nordiska Museet (The Nordic Museum) in Stockholm, Sweden concerning Icelandic museum objects in it possession. The agreement stipulated that the objects were to be delivered to the National Museum of Iceland for perpetual keeping. In 2008 The National Museum of Iceland held the exhibition Across the wide ocean and returning back home where these objects were on display. This book was published on that occasion.
Freyja Hlíðkvist Ómarsdóttir, specialist, and Lilja Árnadóttir, curator, give an account of the collection and of the collection work that resulted in Nordiska Museet acquiring these Icelandic objects.
Margrét Hallgrímsdóttir director of the National Museum of Iceland wrote the foreword to the book.
