In his book Location, Spessi presents us with an inventory of contemporary Iceland far away from the heroic image given in the glossy magazines. Through apparent objective and emotional distance, he manages not only to create a floating relationship between reality an imagination but also an intriguing distortion between space and time.
By photographing the living space of an aged utopian community in the far west of Iceland, representing icons of political heroes of lost Époque, Spessi opens up another layer of reading the time. The last image opens a narrative that has been voluntarily dismissed in the book. By tracing the line between mythmaking and documentation, his images show real lived spaces can represent a complex metaphor of time in much the same way that history is a representation of social transformation of time.
