The book has three articles about Loftur Guðmundsson (1892-1952) a photographer and film maker, his life and work by Erlendur Sveinsson, Inga Lára Baldvinsdóttir and Margrét Elísabet Ólafsdóttir. Loftur was a versatile and prolific man. He was a writer of song texts and a songwriter.

Loftur was one of the principal portrait photographers in Iceland for quarter of a century and his studio enjoyed a huge success.

Loftur was a key player in the history Icelandic film making and was actually the originator of Icelandic film making as an art form. He made both documentaries and dramatisations, including the first Icelandic talking motion picture Milli fjalls og fjöru (Between mountain and shore) in 1948.

This book publishes for the first time a selection of photographs by loftur and these are both originals and new photos from the National Museum collection.
