District museums in Iceland.
Since the middle of the 20th century the district museums have been the bedrock of museum activities in Iceland. This work is the first attempt to gather in one place the history of these museums. The work recounts the self-sacrificing work of the pioneers and the struggle to find facilities for the museums, but it also tells the story of how the museums have grown and how they have managed to become leading cultural and educational institutions each in its own district. They are important associate partners of the National Museum, the leading museum in the field of cultural heritage.
By producing this work, the foundation for the history of the district museums has been laid on which all further research is bound to be based upon.
