The original chess pieces are in the British Museum. They were found on the island of Lewis (Ljóðhúsum) which is part of the Southern Islands, northwest of Scotland. It has been said that the chessmen were carved out of Iceland by Margrét the Fair in the workshop of Bishop Pál Jónsson in Skálholt in the years 1180–1200. Walrus teeth were used for the work.
